Grassroots Readiness and Response for citizens

The Grassroots Readiness and Response Series provides vital information and templates to empower citizens to own their own disaster prevention, preparation, and response initiatives. Preparedness must start with addressing the needs that are most important to the community. Through this three part series, community members come together in a working session to learn and discuss emergency preparedness and response issues that they face everyday. This workshop enhances community members' abilities to collaborate effectively with emergency and volunteer managers, further empowering them to be active participants in the resilient recovery of their community following a disaster or emergency.

Each session is 2 hours and can be delivered over the course of 3 days or in a 1 day session.

World Cares Center partners with Council Members, Non-profit agencies and local leadership to offer this important workshop and continued support.

Target Audiences: Citizens, Volunteers, Faith-based Groups, Scouts

Basic Grassroots Readiness and Response i: Comprehensive Preparedness—2hrs

This foundational workshop guides community members through all the steps of preparedness- individual, family, workplace, school and community, to create a comprehensive plan that is meaningful and meets the needs of the individuals. Grassroots Readiness and Response takes the “all hazards approach” of looking at terrorism, hurricanes, and tornadoes etc. and breaks it down to the hazards and emergencies that may directly affect an individual as a result of such large scale and community-based events such as a blackout and fires. These large-scale events can often be very overwhelming for individuals. By bringing their attention to the hazards that lie in their home and workplace, Grassroots Readiness and Response allows individuals to eliminate these hazards and to prevent disaster before it occurs. Individuals who are prepared have a sense of empowerment which often leads them to emerge as resilient and pro-active when large-scale disasters do strike.

Intermediate Grassroots Readiness and Response II : Bridging the Divide– 2 hrs

Synergy in relationships is very important. Emergency Managers and citizens are no different. Bridging the Divide educates citizens about disaster response agencies within their own community, the state and the nation that are there to help in time of disaster. Community members assess what risk, vulnerabilities and resources are available in their communities and match them with the available response agencies. Participants create a community assessment that includes local assets, community contacts and other culturally relevant resources.

Advanced Grassroots Readiness and Response III: Powerful Volunteering and Community
Leadership—2 hrs

This advanced community-based workshop enables citizens to take a closer look at the skills they possess and how they can become powerful volunteers. Resiliency techniques ensure that each participant understands the risks involved in disaster work and how to mitigate them. Individuals also examine what disaster volunteering opportunities are available and how they can become involved in their community. Powerful Volunteering is an advanced course that requires participants to have completed Grassroots Readiness and Response I and II.

Grassroots Readiness and Response for seniors

As community role models, the experiences of the senior citizen population that are passed on from generation to generation is an invaluable gift. At the same time, many senior citizens know little about disaster preparedness. Because of this fact, it is important to not only educate senior citizens about disaster preparedness, response and recovery, but encourage them to use their skills as community leaders and disaster volunteers.

This workshop empowers our senior participants to emerge as volunteers instead of victims during disaster response. Designed specifically to meet the needs of the senior population, this workshop series teaches senior citizens how to prepare themselves, their families and their communities for disasters and emergencies.

In addition, seniors learn about the disaster organizational system and how it relates to them. Seniors then identify the skills they posses and need to become powerful disaster volunteers for existing disaster relief and recovery organizations in their communities.

This workshop is open to all senior community members. Each session is 2 hours.

Grassroots Readiness and Response for Employees

Corporate Preparedness Beyond the Desktop

The Grassroots Readiness and Response Series for Employees

The people who worked in the World Trade Center towers thought they were facing an ordinary chaotic day on September 11, 2009. Little did they know that they would have two airplanes strike their building. Companies like Morgan Stanley Dean Witter had practiced mass evacuation drills many times before. With instructions from officials to stay put at their desks, Rick Rescorla the head of security for Morgan Stanley instructed the evacuation of all the employees over his bullhorn just as they had practiced. On that fateful day, Rick Rescorla directed over 2,000 employees of Morgan Stanley to safety. While he lost his life along with 5 of his fellow security guards, it was the practice and preparation of the Morgan Stanley employees that saved their lives.

Because employees spend the largest portions of their day at their workplace, it is essential that they know how to prepare for, respond to and mitigate disaster. World Cares Center’s Grassroots Readiness and Response Training for Employees goes beyond the desktop to put plans in place at the individual, family and workplace level to ensure that employees are comprehensively prepared for disaster and emergency. A prepared employee will be able to emerge as a responder, just as Rick Rescorla did on 9/11.

This workshop is open to individuals who employees of any size organization.
