International Support - Japan
|
In the aftermath of the largest earthquake to strike Japan in the nation’s history, World Cares Center has been actively supporting local community organizations impacted by the disaster.
Within 24 hours of the catastrophic event, WCC made offers to its contacts within the country offering support managing spontaneous volunteers.

With the help of community partners in the Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan, WCC has identified a need for materials that help children and youth deal with the psychological effects that the traumatic event has provoked. With many schools and daycare facilities impacted by the earthquake and tsunami, many children are left without sufficient activity to divert their attention away from the catastrophic event. To help meet this need, World Cares Center is compiling culturally relevant materials for kids and their parents that guide them in the coping process as part of the long term recovery efforts for the citizens of Japan.
As is the case for virtually all large scale disasters throughout history, the citizens in the impacted areas and beyond converged spontaneously to assist in full surge capacity needs. The work of these spontaneous volunteers is an invaluable resource that greatly contributed to initial response efforts and will continue to contribute to ongoing relief and recovery efforts. World Cares Center believes that spontaneous volunteerism is a pivotal component to any disaster relief effort and provides trainings for a variety of audiences on how to be an effective disaster volunteer and how to properly manager spontaneous volunteers.
