Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation is New Supporter of World Cares Center

The New York Division of Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) has recently awarded $150,000 to World Cares Center to support the center’s work in locally-based disaster training, preparation and mitigation. The generous gift by IICF will allow World Cares Center (WCC) to modify and upgrade the training series for both community members and disaster managers.

WCC will develop a “Train the Trainer” module for the Disaster Volunteering (internal link: programs/dptm/volunteering) training series and standardize the curriculum for the Leading and Managing Spontaneous Unaffiliated Community Volunteers (internal link: programs/dptm/ leading) trainings. The train-the-trainer model and our online portal – ReadyResponders Network – will be utilized to reach the maximum number of participants through its existing and developing network of elected officials, faith based groups, businesses and corporations, NGOs, Offices of Emergency Management, Citizen Corps councils and universities.

Since its initiation in 2005 more than 4,000 disaster leaders and managers have completed the Leading and Managing Spontaneous Unaffiliated Community Volunteers trainings, which have been offered in 19 cities across the United States as well as in Bermuda and New Zealand. With the improvements to the two training programs, leaders and managers will train thousands of individuals locally on how to prepare themselves and their families and communities for disaster.

After nearly a decade of research and inspired by experiences in the field, World Cares Center continues to develop and refine culturally-sensitive services that both empower community residents and provide a way for emergency managers to better integrate community perspectives and volunteers.

Con Edison is proud to announce a strategic partnership with World Cares Center aimed at
Delivering WCC's Grassroots Readiness and Response training combined with Con Edison’s Energy101 workshop to areas with barriers to service in Northwest Queens. Con Edison has a long-established tradition of contributing to and maintaining the social, cultural, and economic vitality of our service areas throughout New York City and Westchester County and we are happy to continue this tradition through World Cares Center’s initiatives.

For over seven years, WCC has been servicing the needs of communities affected by disaster. We know that WCC's creative, sensible and efficient training bring the skills of survivorship and community self-sufficiency to Northwest Queens, including professional first responders, emergency managers and the community of spontaneous unaffiliated volunteers.

Because of WCC's existing success in delivering programming in New York City through its Grassroots Readiness and Response workshop, it was an obvious decision to pair our Con Edison's Energy 101 training program with your current community preparedness training initiatives.

Con Edison is excited that this workshop will provide community members with the skills and knowledge necessary to become effective community preparedness leaders in their neighborhoods in Northwest Queens.
